Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Title: Facts and Figures of waste management aspects in Middle East North Africa region countries

General Comments:

This research examines deficiencies and long-standing problems in waste management in MENA countries, and presents considerable arguments and data in comparison. And gave opinions on National Waste Management and Related Derivative Issues. I reviewed the manuscript with interest, after a careful examination of this paper, this manuscript should be major revised.

On the one hand, I found the paper to be overall well written and much of it to be well described. I felt confident that the authors performed careful and thorough data processing.

On the other hand, I found some of the description of the paper to be too detailed, while the description of some very important points were inadequate or completely missing. I have very little confidence in one important analysis, and came away with too many questions to be able to recommend this paper for publication as it stands. Therefore, I recommend that a major revision is warranted.

Minor comments:

Some of the data in the article is perfect but I don't see the source of the data, which is a bit of a shame.

In addition, I think the necessity of the article to study the development of new energy in the Middle East is debatable. Although the Middle East countries have recently made commitments in environmental protection, as the world's main gathering place for oil-producing countries, the development of renewable energy in the short term in the future. The motive power is very low, I think it is not good to choose to study new energy in this area.

There are still some details:

1)Certain page numbers (e.g. page 15) have significantly lower clarity than others.

2)It's indistinguishable to have the exact same font size for the primary and secondary headings, or at least add a table of contents.

Slight recommendations

1.      keywords are missing

2.      When (MENA) shows for the first time, authors should explain that it means the Middle East North Africa region

3.      In the Introduction Paragraph (line 36) in this thesis. What do the authors mean by thesis here?

4.      In Line 66 (Egypt has 99 million inhabitants and generates 29 million Tons of MSW annually) Moreover, Egypt does not show in Figure 2. It is logical that Egypt showed in figure 2

5.      For the title (Gross domestic product), it is recommended to modify the title to be (Gross domestic product of Oil)

6.      In table 1, (Egypt, Arab Republic) is not correct. It could be Arab Republic of Egypt or Only Egypt

7.      Figure 7: Waste composition in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region

The authors should specify the year when collecting these data.

Major Recommendation

8.      For the paragraph (Land requirements for landfills)

It is highly recommended to add a section titled " Suggested Strategies to deal with MSW in MENA Region"

This paragraph should show all the suggested appropriate strategies where landfill is one of those strategies.
