Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In this paper, the authors used data envelopment analysis to calculate the sustainability index in which the trout production units of the Amazonas region, Peru, operate, and obtained a general index of medium level with a total of 56 sub-indicators, which can be useful for decision-making on future rainbow trout farming in this region. The topic is suitable for the journal and should be interesting to the readers. But it still needs further modification for a better work before publication. Below are some comments.

(1) The BCC model of DEA is adopted in this paper, and the survey method is questionnaire survey. The indicators adopted by the questionnaire are divided into four levels.

(2) Should the author properly state the meaning of other models in DEA (CCR, Malmquist, etc.) and their application in aquaculture efficiency, and explain why the BBC model is better in this scenario?

(3) It is recommended to list the results of the analysis of the 6 DMUs oversized units or not in production. and indicate why they were removed.

(4) the author should be specific enough in the analysis of DMUs efficiency. Readers do not know which DMUs the group whose index is between 70-90 and 90-100 represents, so they are not sure whether the recommendation is effective or not.

In general, the analysis of the sustainability of trout farming in Amazonas, Peru, the impact of input on output was not echoed enough, and the description was confused. The author should clarify the logic of the exposition so that the reader can clearly understand the relationship and view of the input and output in this aspect.

Please take into account the corrections and suggestions I made in the attached MS aiming to increase its quality. Among other minor things, the Conclusions should be rewritten to be more convincing from a practical point of view.

Title: Integrating assessment of characterization, sustainability and efficiency for the production of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): A case study in the Amazonas region of Peru.

Manuscript ID: agriculture-2008967.

Dear Editor and authors,

The manuscript entitled “Integrating assessment of characterization, sustainability and efficiency for the production of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): A case study in the Amazonas region of Peru” aimed to investigate the sustainability index and relative efficiency  of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) production, a topic not yet explored in the Amazonas Region of Peru. The manuscript could be accept after bellow corrections.

Abstract

Please, add the information in the text to subsidize the conclusion that the trout farm works at levels of technical inefficiency.

Materials and Methods

Please, add the questions used in the questionnaire. At least as annex. Or add the information that the question used as described at Tables in results.

Results

Table 2. What means the values at the third column? Please, add the information.

Please, add in the footnote of all tables the score variation of the each variable.

How did you evaluate the indicators at Table 5? Please, add information in footnote?

Discussion

“4.3. Technical Efficiency

In the 33 trout production units evaluated, a high efficiency index was found (83.87%),…”

Is the information above has connection to the below (conclusion)? The information is a little confused in my opinion.

“Finally, it can be affirmed that the trout farming units in northeastern Peru are in 3 groups differentiated by production volume, operate at a medium level of sustainability and most are at levels of technical inefficiency.”

Conclusion

“When we calculated to calculate the sustainability…”. Please, review the sentence.

Reviewer 4 Report

The present study is a novel work in sustainable evaluation of fish farming, which could be a new approach in the sustainability of agricultural studies. The experiment well designed and written. the different used statistical analysis is highly suitable and i think this study will lead this trend for decades.
