Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper studied the influence of the inner courtyard of high-rise buildings on the diffusion of kitchen cooking pollutants under natural ventilation conditions through site measurement and numerical simulation. Overall, the Findings of this paper have guiding significance for the design of high-rise residential buildings. I suggest that the paper should make a minor revision for publication.

1、In Section 2.2, the author did not mention the turbulence model, grid type, grid number, and other information used in the numerical simulation study. The important info is missing.

2、In tables 3 and 4, it should be explained why the "DPM boundary" of "inlet" and "stove top" is "wall jet ".

3、In Section 2.3, to make readers better understand the corresponding relationship between the configuration of cases and research variables, it is suggested that the author add a remark column in the table or clarify the cases corresponding to the three research factors in the text description, such as (1) inner-courtyard openness (A-2, A-3).

4、The figures in this paper are missing the horizontal axis title and units, such as Figure 6. The author is advised to optimize the figure to make it self-evident.

The article addresses an interesting topic, consistent with the journal’s aim, but it can be substantially improved.

The experimental setup indicates too summarily wind characteristics (SE direction). It is important to indicate the wind spectrum or, at least, average speed and its variance.

Why the Exhaust vent was set with a negative pressure 150Pa? Is there any evidence or reference?

In table 4, please indicates K (Kelvin) with capital letters. The same for Pascal.

The CFD simulations are 3D, but all results are reported as 2D. What are the influence of vertical distribution? Have you tried to make contour maps like those in tables 7 and 8 with vertical cuts?

Of at least one environment it would be interesting to map the particle tracks. Also to see if the control points eventually fall randomly into “blind spots”.

Is the height of the control points the same? the coordinates of these points should be indicated (currently we refer only to an image).

The article lacks clear indications on the type and size of mesh. They are important to understand the sensitivity of the study.

Although not essential, it would be interesting to correlate the presence of PM2.5 with the expected impacts according to one of the LCIA methods (e.g. respiratory effects as in van Oers L, Guin´ee J. The abiotic depletion potential: Background, updates, and future. Resources 2016;5. https://doi.org/10.3390/resources5010016.).

Reviewer 3 Report

I read the article entitled “ Influence of Cooking Pollutant Diffusion Regularity by Highrise Residential Inner-Courtyard Forms in Wuhan ” with high interest. The study is quite interesting and motivated, due to the relative lack of investigations about cooking pollutants diffusion in the kitchens of the middle flats and the flow field in the inner courtyard.

The title of the article corresponds to the performed investigation and is well chosen. The simulation performed in the study is validated in the field of measurements. The text is readable and well written.

I do not have significant comments for the authors of the manuscript that need to be answered in detail. The article is well documented, with recent references. The images are very well prepared and describe very well the process that stays behind the research performed.  The tables are very comprehensible and very abundant in data. An overall conclusion is that the article is very well prepared and easy to read, with high scientific value. I recommend being published in the present form.
