Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article touches on the extremely important topic of the link between farmers and MIDSTREAM MARKETS. The work contains no new groundbreaking content, and is not easy for the reader to understand.  The article contains many issues that should be improved. The most problems can be seen in the methodological layer.

Specific comments:
1. It is worth to expand the summary, especially the results of the study.
2. Line 48 "sex"?
3. Lack of a clearly stated research objective
4. Agrinatura Value Chains Analysis for Development (VCA4D). What is it? How does it work, what kind of data it collects, on what basis is the data compiled. Do you create them or only use the data.
5. Table 2 "Lsrge"?
6. Figure 4. How are the different farm size categories defined? What is a smallholder?
7. How is Capital/output ratio I Input Intensity in Primary Production defined?
8. Two research questions "What is the impact of smallholder linkages with commercial midstream value chains segments on investments" and "What is the impact of value added generation in midstream value chain segment on composition of the farm size structure in primary production". I highly doubt that an answer to these has been obtained. Yes, a certain relationship between these values was shown, but without the use of statistical methods it is difficult to talk about confirmation of the relationship here.
