Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In order to assist the authors to improve the manuscript I used the resubmitted version of the manuscript to denote a number of points that to my view must be modified/improved or added. These points are highlighted in green and the suggested corresponding changes/actions  appear in the callout rectangles (see attached file)

In the first round of the review  I indicated that there is a need for revision of English, something that has not been done. Under these circumstances I had to identify basic language problems that mainly refer to the  terminology used and have an impact to the underlying meaning. An example on this is the the use of the term "grid" vs "grid cell" and that of "precision" vs "accuracy".  Obviously my language review is not exhaustive and the authors or a professional editor should undertake this task.

Provided that the Othello game constitutes an anchor for the method described, authors may consider adding an Annex explaining the Othello game and its relevance to the methodology used. I am convinced that the readers will appreciate it.

Conclusion: Although a number of questions raised in the first round of the review have been answered the manuscript is not yet mature for publication.

This is an interesting topic and approach taken by the authors. I assume that most transportation network modelers work with vector-based systems, so more discussion and/or comparison of vector versus raster systems for this type of analysis may be helpful. The overall contributions of the research should be made more clear.

This manuscript is a resubmission of an earlier submission. The following is a list of the peer review reports and author responses from that submission.

Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

  1. The manuscript presents a fast-constructing method of urban road maps and the development of a compressed grid algorithm suitable for use in applications where low precision is required.
  2. Authors claim that the methodology proposed is executed extremely fast and the storage space required is considerably less than the one required by other applications available and on the same time maintains the pertinent accuracy levels. Without questioning the proposed methodology, I am concerned with the reliability of these findings due to the fact that no information is given for the resolution of the raster that leads to the specific results. This has to be clearly stated in the respective section along with the corresponding outcomes for reduced grid sizes and the relevant accuracies achieved.
  3. With respect to the description of the methodology itself, I am afraid that the average reader will not be in a position to fully interpret the overall process and especially the Othello-Coordinated design. This section should be revisited and revised/rewritten.
  4. Formula #1 used for the conversion of geographical to X,Y coordinates (lines 176-178) should be analytically extracted and attached as an Annex to the paper. Alternatively a specific reference on the specific formula should be cited.
  5. Minor issues:

Lines 62-63 replace "System" with "Systems"

Line 77 replace "expandability" with "expansibility" (that is used later in the text)

Line 97 replace "aeras" with "areas" and insert a full stop between "level" and "The"

Line 103 Express region ?????

Line 113 replace "the mentioned" with "the above mentioned" or "the  aforementioned".

Line 139 replace "to be translated" with "to be converted"

Line163, 164.... The term "planarization" is not appropriate. Same with the verb "planarize" where ever they appear in the text

Line 207 replace "the practical physic length" with "the size"

Line 230 replace "a road condition in a certain area change" to read "the road condition in a certain area changes"

Line 232 "the largest specification" is not valid

Line 280 "the same backing map" is not a valid expression

Line 328 replace "Contrasting" with "Comparing" or Comparison with .......

The submission needs substantial editing for English language grammar and terminology. It's difficult for me to make a recommendation until the writing is addressed.
