Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

It is advised to provide a table that briefly illustrates the densities of the two types of wood that were researched, along with other types of wood.

What are the mechanical and physical properties of red larch and silver fir?

Please classify the density of the wood into groups such as light, moderately heavy, heavy, and very heavy.

What is the basis for using and comparing the two types of woods?

What is the standard for density testing?

Line 420 – 424:  What is the mechanical testing conducted in this article? It wasn't described in the paper.

The results obtained from the mechanical tests allow to determine the increase in the mechanical properties of the two different woods after the densification processes. The most significant increase, equal to three times the initial value, is observed in fir treated wood, whereas there is not such a high increase in mechanical properties in densified materials deriving from larch wood.

I would suggest including the theoretical and practical contribution in the abstract of the work.

Conclusions -

Failed to establish the limitation

You need a very brief discussion that articulates the theoretical and practical contribution of the paper.

Reviewer 2 Report

The problem of thermal modification of wood has been known for many years. But as the authors point out, almost all the proposed methods involve reducing agents and strong bases. This work has developed a new approach concerning using less polluting agents.

I highly appreciate the choice of the topic of the work.

My doubts relate to the following points:

1. The Material chapter is described too briefly.

2. Some of the information in the Results chapter should be moved to the Methods chapter.

3. The Results chapter needs to be more widely described (see above).

4. More references to other authors' research results in the discussion need to be added. This chapter needs to be supplemented.

5. I also propose to provide brief conclusions arising from the research. Although there is no requirement to do so, listing the findings for the reader will be better and more transparent.

Please remove the first paragraph from the conclusions. It deals with what has been done (in particular, the purpose of the work). The findings could also be made shorter, where this is possible.
