Citrus aurantium ‘Crispifolia’ Essential Oil: a Promise for Nutraceutical Applications

Review 1 – 5 January 2023

Dear Editor of Nutraceuticals

the argument is interesting but it has to be improved. The bibliography has to be extended. The analytical methods have to be described. The manuscript is not always arranged as per the instructions for authors of Nutraceuticals. Inaccuracies in the text.

I suggest a major revision

To the Authors (in detail):

  1. Introduction section, lines 29-31, improve the discussion about the botanical origin by discussing the following papers [X1, X2]:

[X1] Citrus phylogeny and genetic origin of important species as investigated by molecular markers.

Theor Appl Genet (2000) 100:1155–1166

[X2] The Origin of Cultivated Citrus as Inferred from Internal Transcribed Spacer and Chloroplast DNA Sequence and Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism Fingerprint

J. AMER. SOC. HORT. SCI. 135(4):341–350. 2010s.

  1. Introduction section, lines 38-39, extend and complete this sentence. Explain that the essential oil composition of citrus peel is related to many factors, such as harvest year [X3], harvest date [X4]; cultivar [X5], extraction system [X6] and support this statement with proper references. Please, do not cumulate the references at the end of the sentence but include each one to support each variable:

[X3] The peel essential oil composition of bergamot fruit (Citrus bergamia, Risso) of Reggio Calabria  (Italy): a review.

Emirates Journal of Food and Agriculture  32 (11) 835-845 (2020)

doi: 10.9755/ejfa.2020.v32.i11.2197

[X4] Changes of Peel Essential Oil Composition of Citrus aurantium L. During Fruit Maturation in Iran.

Journal of Essential Oil Bearing Plants, 18:4, 1006-1012,

DOI: 10.1080/0972060X.2014.977564

[X5] Citrus bergamia, Risso: the peel, the juice and the seed oil of the bergamot fruit of Reggio Calabria (South Italy).

Emirates Journal of Food and Agriculture 32(7) 522-532 (2020).

DOI: 10.9755/ejfa.2020.v32.i7.2128

[X6]  Cold Pressing, Hydrodistillation and Microwave Dry Distillation of Citrus Essential Oil from Algeria: A Comparative Study.

            Electronic Journal of Biology, 2016, Vol.S1: 30-41

  1. Sub-section 2.1, please indicate from how many fruits peel was obtained and also from how many trees were obtained the fruits used in this experiment;
  2. Sub-section 2.1, you stated that the Clevenger method is described in the reference 11, but this is not true, please, here describe carefully the EO extraction;
  3. Sub-section 2.2, in your ref 12, it is not described the GC-MS analysis, please, detail here step by step and carefully;
  4. Verify all analytical methods, if it is really true that your refs contain the analytical methods. If you indicate a reference, the authors of this reference have to describe the method. The reader does not want to find 2-4 references before to read the analytical methods;
  5. Sub-section 2.6, line 105, why a dot after 36 h?
  6. Table 1: the species in small letters and italicized;
  7. The captions of tables have to be written above the table and not below, please, use some recently published paper as a template;
  8. Please, write in blue color or evidence differently the corrections you will do.

I suggest a major revision
