Visual Prosthesis

Dear Colleagues,

The field of visual prostheses has developed tremendously over the past decade and today artificial vision is an exciting field in both ophthalmology and basic science. Thanks to all of these multidisciplinary efforts, different technologies able to help the blind have been published in many specialized scientific journals and over 300 hundred patients have experienced significant improvements in their visual function. However, at present these devices are only able to provide vision with relatively low spatial resolution and there are still many open technical challenges that need to be solved.

This Special Issue is inspired by the fact that to be able to restore useful vision and reach the high potential envisioned by these technologies, we need to promote dialogue between basic research laboratories, clinical researchers and potential end users. Therefore, the main aim is to bring together researchers from the fields of retina and vision science, ophthalmology, neuroscience, engineering, material sciences, informatics, neurology, neurosurgery, professionals working with visual impaired people and others who are interested in the restoration of vision in the blind using visual pathway prostheses.

The current Special Issue is open to submissions of previously unpublished experimental, prospective, perspective and review papers on all aspects of visual prostheses including the following and related topics:

• Engineering the human visual system

• Neural stimulation of the visual system

• Retinal approaches

• Orbital and intracranial approaches

• Preclinical and clinical experiences

• Simulation of vision with prosthetic devices

• Assessing patients’ suitability and outcome

• Visual rehabilitation with prosthetic devices

• Improvements, modifications and new ideas

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Vision is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
