Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by a protozoan that affects the most vulnerable communities worldwide. It accounts for high morbidity and mortality loads in the visceral form and disfigurement leading to stigma in the cutaneous form. Transmission and clinical presentations are heterogeneous and governed by environmental, climate-related as well as individual factors such as socio-economic, nutrition and host immune status.

The dynamics of infection and disease are determined by complex processes, which complicates control interventions. Despite significant investments in chemotherapy and control of the reservoir, visceral leishmaniasis remains a high priority in endemic countries, prompting the need for more research into optimal management approaches and their implementation. The cutaneous form is still causing stigma, social isolation and psychological burden, particularly among women in rural areas.

The current Special Issue will focus on this neglected tropical disease by presenting the most updated knowledge from highly specialized experts on the clinical, epidemiological and models characterizing infection and disease evolution. Through this update, we aim to throw some light on this neglected high-priority public health problem, thereby increasing awareness among scientists and policy makers, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, which has attracted most of their interest and investment.

Eligible scientific papers include clinical manifestations and epidemiological studies, transmission cycles, time series analysis as well as findings of mathematical models simulating the transmission/disease dynamics in time and space in addition to control options.
