Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Air pollution is a broad term describing a complex mixture of many particles and gases that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere and has damaging effects on living things and the environment, thus influencing our climate system. According to the recent IPCC report (AR6), the Earth surface temperature increased by about 1.5 °C during the recent past decade (2011–2020) as compared to the period from 1850 to 1900. This increase in the Earth’s temperature is clearly related to various human influences, which may cause widespread and rapid changes in the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere, and biosphere. Pollutants in the air come from the variety of emission sources, which are not always visible, but can directly and/or indirectly affect human health and the environment from local to global scale. Thus, the assessment of urban air quality and their impacts on human health and climate system is crucial to understand as the majority of the population lives under the threat of hazardous pollutants.

This Special Issue aims to cover the physio-chemical and optical characteristics of various air pollutants, their source sectors, long-range transport, and their potential implications to  our climate system using synergistic approaches of state-of-the-art techniques, including ground-based, space-borne and modelling tools. Thus, we are seeking original research articles and reviews on urban air pollution and its impacts on human health and the climate system.

We invite authors to submit contributions on topics of their interest, including but not limited to the following:

  • Physio-chemical characteristics of atmospheric pollutants, their composition, and source apportionment.
  • Optical and radiative characteristics of air pollutants.
  • Morphology and mixing states of individual species in different environmental conditions.
  • Ground-based, space-borne and modelling studies of air pollutants.
  • Impacts of anthropogenic emissions on the urban environment and human health.
  • Mitigation policies and the sustainable development of climate change in urban environments.

I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
