Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We welcome your manuscript submissions on the theme of solid waste management and pollution remediation. Municipal solid waste (MSW) generation is escalating with the advent of megacities and population growth. MSW mostly ends up in open dumps and landfills, producing continuous environmental pollution through various emissions into the air, water and soil. The emission of greenhouse gases and volatile organic compounds contributes to climate change and health risks. The economic cost and technical difficulties involved lead to discharge leachate, which is one of the most difficult tasks to manage. Hence, it is essential to assess the risk of discharging highly toxic landfill leachate and gaseous emissions into the environment in order to facilitate decision-making for landfill leachate management and treatment. Among the various solutions proposed and practiced in MSW management, composting and energy production have received great attention. Due to the open dumping of waste, various organic and inorganic pollutants, including microplastics, are prominently seen in compost. The conversion of waste to energy has been hindered by the high moisture content in food waste disposed of in the Asian region. Therefore, this Special Issue of Sustainability invites manuscripts that address solid waste disposal and management, pollution monitoring and treatment, waste to energy conversion, and the circular economy, reflecting new concepts of sustainability in waste management and advancing knowledge in new research directions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
