Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years we have been faced with significant challenges, from economic, energy, environmental, and social perspectives. One of the main targets of governments around the world is to minimize environmental impacts and improve the performance of several sectors to maximize the human contribution to sustainability. The building sector has a relevant role in this field, being responsible for the largest part of energy consumption and greenhouse gases at local and global levels. On the other hand, it has a high potential for energy savings. Efforts to increase the development of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) and/or Zero Energy Buildings (ZEB) have been made all over the world, with the aim of reducing building energy demand and promoting the uptake of renewable energy technologies.

Research on innovative solutions and technologies for the improvement of building performance is very active and efficient proposals have been made in the last years (e.g. innovative materials and/or architectural solutions, technical systems improvement, Smart building management, development of alternative renewable energy sources). Moreover, high importance has to be given to the economic side: the main challenge for NZEB/ZEB is to guarantee energy efficiency, thermal comfort and indoor environmental quality in buildings, while keeping low construction and operational costs. Last but not least, energy analysis on interactions and relationships among buildings inside an urban grid has become relevant in supporting and accelerating the energy transition at district-scale.

In this framework the scope of this special issue is to gather relevant research papers dealing with innovative technological, financial, architectural solutions and planning methodologies to improve the performance of the building sector, paying attention to the cost-optimization of the proposed solutions and to the analysis of the building performance at district level.

The main topic that this Special Issue aims to cover is the analysis of the performance of NZEBs and ZEBs. Authors are welcome to submit paper on, but not limited to, the following topics: energy-saving technologies, energy auditing and monitoring, renewable energy, sustainable rating tools, life-cycle analysis and life-cycle cost, cost-efficient building solutions, smart building solutions, and planning methodologies and models. Papers on these topics can contribute to scientific advancement on technology innovation, policy development and implementation, industrial and commercial practices.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
