Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The effects of COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war on European soil have resulted in unprecedented problems on the security of practically all goods and especially energy supplies in the global energy markets. Europe has been hit the hardest and its strong dependence on foreign supplies of energy has resulted in serious lack of freedom of policy choices and options. The European Commission and the European Union’s Member States have been forced to reconsider the energy policy in a period of just few weeks. Nuclear energy plants are expected to extended their life, coal utilization will be intensified in the short term, with renewables currently substituting natural gas, and new exploration for oil and gas could get new impetus. The term “biogas” has been used by European Commission dignitaries as the best means to increase indigenous gas supplies.

The scope of the Special Issue is to cover the most urgent research needs on issues related to the security of energy supplies and other energy-connected internationally traded goods, such as food and fertilizers. Special focus will be on the effects of restricted supply of energy on European Union policies. This Special Issue aims to elaborate and propose strategies to overcome the present policy limitations while minimizing the dependence of the European Union on external energy supplies and diversifying its external supply chains and energy vectors with renewable energies.

There has been a serious body of literature on COVID-19, but the effects of the ongoing conflict on energy markets and the related policies is a totally new topic, for which no recent literature can be found.

The Guest Editors hope that this Special Issue will be the foundations of a new chapter on strategic research on the significance of the independence and security of energy supply.
