Dear Colleagues,
Ecosystems are increasingly recognized as natural capital resources that provide life support services with enormous scope and value. Our understanding of the production functions of different ecosystems is improving rapidly, with particular attention being paid to the potential the natural environment offers, especially extreme environments, where natural selective pressure gives life to organisms with unique and unexplored peculiarities. From bioremediation to the discovery of new antibiotics, the environment, and the organisms that populate it, research on such unimaginable resources and their use could be valuable for many sectors (e.g. pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, cosmetic, medical, etc.). However, while research is turning largely to bioresources, a systematic assessment of the extent and limits of various ecosystems is also essential for sustainable exploitation. In this context, this Special Issue, “New Advances in Ecosystem Services, Biodiversity, and Environmental Sustainability ", will investigate the latest advances in the sustainable exploitation of different ecosystems and exploration of their potential. We are inviting scientific contributions assessing new biomolecules and the potential of bioremediation using organisms and microorganisms, as well as those evaluating their environmental impact, environmental response, and the assessment of their extent and limits. The environments in question are not limited to temperate ones, and papers on extreme environments (e.g. polar, hydrothermal springs, hypersaline environments, etc ...) are highly encouraged. Furthermore, contributions concerning the implementation of ecosystem policies for sustainable exploitation (at national, regional, and international levels) as well as for the management and conservation of ecosystems are welcome.
