Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The advent of Industry 4.0 paradigms changed the ways supply chain and logistics processes are managed. ICT technologies, such as the Internet of Things, big data, business intelligence, and cloud computing, allowed for the widespread digitalization of industrial processes at large. However, recent recommendations from the European Commission call for the need to shift towards the so-called “Industry 5.0,” which focuses on three main pillars: human centricity, resilience, and sustainability. Specifically, the EU Council in 2020 recognized the ICT sector as a key player in the fight against climate change. In this context, logistics and supply chain management in Industry 5.0 should adapt to its highly automated, connected, and intelligent digital ecosystem to thrive along with the human touch. This Special Issue aims to stimulate research on potential Industry 5.0-oriented solutions to enhance the management of inbound and outbound logistics, warehouses and inventories, and supply chains. We encourage contributions that address, but are not strictly limited to, the following:

  • The use of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) tools for operations management;
  • Novel approaches for supply chain resilience management;
  • Sustainability of logistics processes;
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of complex industrial systems;
  • Innovative solutions for integrating human-centric design, ICT tools, and product service systems (PSS).

Research articles, case studies, and state-of-the-art review papers are welcome. Submitted papers must not be published or currently under review by other journals. We hope that this collection of papers will serve as an inspiration for those interested in the applications of Industry 5.0 principles in the field of operations management.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
