Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Climate change is one of the main challenges we will have to face in the 21st century. The effects of climate change are clear on a global scale, considering the perspective of global warming and the increase in the rate of occurrence of extreme weather events, such as the increased intensity of storm events and changes in rainfall patterns. The general rise in the average temperature is leading to significant changes in the energy consumption of built environments. This also has impacts on the standard building performances. In particular, since the long lifetime of buildings corresponds to the timescale over which the climate is expected to show substantial change, the buildings constructed today need to be resilient to future climates. This will have consequences on our current understanding of optimal building and systems design for all areas of the world. Moreover, designers and engineers will need to understand the changes in building energy demand due to global warming for the designing of future buildings. In this context, the potential impact of climate change on the building sector requires specific and tailored solutions towards both building envelope and energy systems design.

This Special Issue seeks contributions exploring the effects of climate change on the building sector and to address possible solutions to these issues, through the presentation of new approaches, strategies, tools, methods and case study applications. This Special Issue also welcomes contributions aiming to support and advance the UN's 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable) and SDG 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts).

In relation to the above-described context, the focus of this Special Issue will be on, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • New methodological approaches for assessing the effects of climate change on the building sector;
  • Analyses of future trends and pathways of the building sector energy demands;
  • Net-zero energy buildings’ climate resilience;
  • Building resilient designs to extreme weather events;
  • Ecodesign strategies for high-performance buildings and urban environments;
  • Energy, environmental, economic and social assessment of buildings and building technologies;
  • New approaches to sustainable zero energy building development.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
