Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Biodiversity encompasses the natural world around us, representing the vast array of different organisms, microorganisms, fungi, plants, insects, and animals, that inhabit our planet. Without biodiversity, the intricate support system for both human and animal life would crumble. Our reliance on nature extends to the provision of food, clean water, medicinal resources, technology, energy, and the mitigation of flooding and extreme weather events.

Given the paramount importance of biodiversity to our future survival, its loss represents an immense crisis. The decline in biodiversity has been documented for decades through biodiversity monitoring programs and wildlife censuses. To quantify this decline, monitoring programs focused on various plant and animal species are imperative. In the present era, these monitoring initiatives can either be carried out by experts or coordinated by them while involving citizen scientists, thereby expanding the study areas and sample units.

The objective of this Special Issue is to amass and promote monitoring programs worldwide, thereby developing additional data and tools for decision-makers to take action and formulate strategies for biodiversity conservation. Biodiversity monitoring and mapping play a pivotal role in comprehending and safeguarding biodiversity. This understanding holds significance for human well-being, supplying sustenance, medicines, and recreational opportunities, as well as ecological services like pollination, nutrient cycling, and soil formation.

We intend to endorse both professional and citizen science programs on a global scale, contributing valuable information that aids in the comprehension of species population dynamics, trends, and distributions across natural, semi-natural, and anthropic habitats. Gaining insight into nature will empower us to take proactive steps to safeguard our species for the coming generations.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Ecological modelling
  • Climate change
  • Biodiversity conservation
  • Ecosystem services
  • Protected area management
  • Protected area network

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
