Dear Colleagues,
The threats imposed by rising energy shortages and environmental pollution have triggered urgent research on green and circular economy. As a sustainable and renewable resource, biomass is not only an abundant carbon source but is also readily accessible in nature and is a promising alternative power supply to fossil energies. The utilization of biomass is a pathway to obtain renewable bio-oils, value-added biochemicals, biopolymers, etc., which grants us a sustainable and circular economy.
A staggering number of post-consumer plastic wastes are cumulatively piling in human living spaces and flooding into oceans, which has imposed a huge threat on the global ecological environment and human health, for example, white pollution risks and microplastics ingested by marine organisms and plants. As of now, incineration and landfill are the widely used methods to dispose of plastic wastes. It is of great interest to focus on the upcycling of plastic wastes into valuable fuels or chemicals to enhance the sustainability of the economy.
The vision of this Special Issue is to upcycle waste biomass and plastics, such as through the production of potential transportation fuels, the extraction of high-purity hydrogen, the generation of biobased products, etc. Ultimately, the issue will cover mitigating the global pollution crisis with the aim of strengthening the sustainable economy and reinforcing energy safety.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Thermocatalytic conversions of solid waste to energy;
- Fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass;
- Lignin to value-added bioproducts;
- Biopolymers.
