Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Within the framework of Sustainable Development set forth by the United Nations in its 2030 agenda, objectives such as the fight against climate change, environmental protection and the design of cities are included. Considering that the landscape scale is a perspective of knowledge of the natural processes and social activities; that there are noticeable regional differences in natural environments, social development and their interactions; which also create different socio-ecological problems, and especially an imbalance between the supply and demand of the ecosystem services. Moreover, that biodiversity, the basis of life on our planet, is being affected; therefore, we propose a special issue of Sustainability magazine dedicated to “How landscape structure and spatial analysis help in the assessment of sustainable ecosystems and biodiversity”.

We are pleased to invite contributions of scientific advances on this topic in different contexts (countries) and at multiple levels (such as the national level, regional level, and local level) in order to develop future strategies for the sustainable global management of socio-ecological systems based on spatial analyses of landscape structures. The landscape has become a key spatial unit for assessing sustainable development. Since the beginning of the 21st century, studies on landscape sustainability have gradually become a key topic in landscape ecology and sustainability science.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Measuring and monitoring landscape sustainability;
  • Landscape sustainability tools;
  • Sustainable landscape patterns;
  • Sustainable ecosystem and biodiversity assessments at the landscape scale;
  • Ecosystem services assessment at the landscape scale;
  • Applications of landscape sustainability;
  • Effects of global climate change on development and landscape sustainability.

I look forward to receiving your contributions.
