Development Goals towards Sustainability

A section of Sustainability (ISSN 2071-1050).

Section Information

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, aims to achieve global peace and prosperity. The ambitious aims of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are to protect the planet, eradicate poverty, and provide peace as well as prosperity for all citizens. The challenge is undeniably lofty, and it is critical to track progress toward these SDGs over time. The 17 SDGs necessitate immediate action by all countries—developed and developing—via a global partnership. Because the theme is so broad, it must be split into different areas. There is a need for an interdisciplinary approach that can integrate artificial intelligence with the water–energy–food nexus, that frames the contribution of sustainability from a technological standpoint, and that identifies challenges.

The 17 SDGs to transform our world are as follows:
SDG 1: No Poverty.
SDG 2: Zero Hunger.
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
SDG 4: Quality Education.
SDG 5: Gender Equality.
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.
SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy.
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.
SDG 10: Reduced Inequality.
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
SDG 13: Climate Action.
SDG 14: Life Below Water.
SDG 15: Life on Land.
SDG 16: Peace and Justice Strong Institutions.
SDG 17: Partnerships to achieve the SDG.

Universities should lead cultural change by listening to students more, increasing their sense of responsibility to others, and directing their assignments to impact the greatest number of people. Civil society, based on sustainable education and youth confidence, is called to distinguish pragmatic sustainability from ideological sustainability. Sustainable washing cannot solve current problems, and sustainability is that multicoloured light that can illuminate the lives of all of us.

This Section strongly encourages an interdisciplinary approach that captures the true meaning of sustainability: overcoming a selfish vision by considering the entirety of society, including future generations. In this way, development goals will permit the reaching of sustainable practices and actions.

Accordingly, the Section “Development Goals towards Sustainability” is interested in conceptual articles, perspectives, research articles, and review articles covering the whole breadth of SDG concerns. This section welcomes Special Issue proposals from experts on these topics and greatly encourages collaboration among academia, industry, and policy.

It is strongly suggested that the authors highlight the Sustainable Development Goal(s) they intend to achieve, in order to support raising awareness about The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the implementation of the SDGs into our everyday lives.
