Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nowadays, there are more than one billion motor vehicles (cars, trucks and buses) in the world, and if the rate of growth continues (the number doubles every 20 years), there could be more than 3 billion vehicles in 2040. Because of this, in recent years, the field of intelligent vehicles has emerged as an important topic for both research and industry. These vehicles can be understood as those that use technologies such as electronics, computers, communication and automatic control to bring about social, environmental and economic benefits.

(a) the position and kinematic and dynamic state of the vehicle, (b) the state of the environment surrounding the vehicle, (c) the state of the driver and occupants, (d) communication with roadside infrastructure or other vehicles, and (e) access to digital maps and satellite data.

The aim of this Special Issue is to obtain a perspective on the use of on-board and remote sensors in the intelligent vehicle field to give readers a clear picture on the advances that are to be expected. Welcomed topics include, but are not strictly limited to, the following:

  Global–local vehicle positioning:

  • Vehicle location;
  • Navigation systems;
  • Obstacle detection.

   Road scene understanding:

  • Precise geometry of the lane/road;
  • Road signal and traffic light detection;
  • Road weather conditions and visibility;
  • Road pavement conditions: detection of bumps and breaks in pavements;
  • Traffic conditions and presence of other vehicles and/or vulnerable road users.

   Driver assistance:

  • Collision avoidance (backup, rear-end, pedestrian, lane-changing collisions);
  • Parking assistance;
  • Keeping in lane/lane changing;
  • Emergency assistance.

   Driver monitoring:

  • Driver fatigue, distraction, inattention;
  • Abnormal driving detection and/or impaired driving;
  • Driver and passenger active safety systems;
  • Passenger evaluation for emergency assistance.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
