Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) allow significantly extending the perception capabilities of the environment for automotive systems, especially for connected and autonomous vehicles as well as condition monitoring and prognostics of electronic components and systems. These interconnections of independent sensor nodes together with the corresponding data analytics are of pivotal importance to improve vehicle safety, traffic efficiency, and comfort.

Due to constraints such as low cost, low energy consumption and high integration density, demands on availability, reliability, quality, privacy, maintainability, and security of wireless sensor networks are technically challenging for several time-critical, mission-critical, and safety-critical applications.

This Special Issue is dedicated to contributions concerning dependability of WSNs in the field of autonomous vehicles and will highlight current and future applications for highly and fully automated driving, such as platooning, cooperative driving, cooperative active safety, or multimodal mobility. It will include, among others, the topics of:

  • Inter-vehicle communication (v2v, v2x);
  • Intra-vehicle communication (condition monitoring, passenger monitoring, etc.);
  • WSN updates over the air;
  • Ad hoc networks;
  • Simulation-supported development methods of WSN;
  • WSN hardware design;
  • Data acquisition and pre-processing (edge/cloud computing);
  • Testing and validation of WSN;
  • Synchronisation of sensors;
  • Health assessment and diagnistics of WSN;
  • Intrusion detection and prevention in WSNs;
  • Data fusion and integration of signals from heterogeneous multiple sensors;
  • Sensor-based object detection/recognition;
  • Dependability demands and their implementation;
  • Security, privacy, and cryptographic algorithms in WSNs;
  • Software security for sensor network nodes;
  • Secure routing and localization protocols for WSNs;
  • Real-time WSN operating systems and reliability and QoS;
  • Trust-based protocols and computational models for WSNs;
  • Anonymity and privacy models for WSNs;
  • Emerging standards.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
