Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have gradually become a part of our lives. Ranging from personal devices, such as smart watches, to home appliances, such as smart meters and fridges, and industrial devices, such as sensors, the ubiquitous existence of these WSN devices has greatly benefited our daily life and economy. With the rapid growth of WSN devices, huge amounts of data, termed “big data”, will be produced continuously. The fusion of WSN and big data technologies has created opportunities for the development of services for many complex systems, such as smart cities. Big sensing data have provided new application opportunities for industries and academia to develop new WSN solutions. However, challenges have also arisen. As part of WSN functionality, a large amount of personal, sometimes quite sensitive, data is collected, aggregated, and analyzed through WSN devices, which poses a significant data privacy concern. Therefore, security is one of the major issues regarding big sensing data. As the big data generated from WSN devices are often dynamic and unstructured, the current security solutions, mainly designed for protecting statistic and structured data, are unable to provide effective security to various big sensing data.

It is therefore necessary to bring efficient big data processing technologies, such as machine learning, cloud computing, and blockchain, in line with the need for big sensing data protection. With these challenges in mind, this Special Issue aims to promote cutting-edge research that focuses on various topics that are related to security and privacy protection for big data in WSNs. This Special Issue will focus on the following, but not limited to, topics:

-Secure aggregation and computation of big sensing data;

-Lightweight security/privacy protocols for big sensing data exchange;

-Privacy-preserving big sensing data analytics through differential privacy;

-Machine learning, deep learning, and federated learning for big sensing data;

-Cloud computing and edge computing for big sensing data;

-Blockchain for big sensing data;

-New security/privacy frameworks for WSNs;

-Security attacks and analysis over WSN frameworks;

-System design of industrial WSNs for resiliency, reliability, and security;

-AI-based approaches for enhancing WSN security;

-Security and privacy assessment over WSN platforms.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
