Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The importance of MAC and routing protocols in sensor networks lies in their central role in managing communication efficiency and energy conservation under the resource constraints of sensor nodes. Recent progress in this field has been marked by the development of more sophisticated, adaptive protocols that optimize energy consumption and improve network longevity. Innovations include the introduction of machine learning to predict and adapt to network demands, the use of adaptive duty-cycling in MAC protocols to reduce energy use, and the advancement of intelligent routing protocols capable of rerouting in response to changes in the network or environment. These improvements are vital to support the expanding use of sensor networks in various applications, such as environmental monitoring and smart city infrastructure, where reliable, long-term operation is essential.

The aim of this Special Issue is to bring together academic and industrial researchers to identify and discuss the research directions, technical challenges, and potential industrial applications to the recent cutting-edge results pertaining to (1) the applications of sensor networks and (2) the fundamental theories that are related to MAC and routing protocols in sensor networks.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Energy-efficient MAC and routing in sensor networks;
  2. Scalable and reliable MAC and routing in sensor networks;
  3. Cross-layer design of MAC and routing protocols in sensor networks;
  4. Interplay between MAC/routing protocols with artificial intelligence;
  5. Security issues related to Internet of Things;
  6. Resource allocation for MAC and routing in sensor networks;
  7. Energy harvesting in MAC of sensor networks;
  8. Integrated wireless sensors and satellite networks;
  9. Artificial-intelligence-enabled energy consumption prediction through sensors;
  10. Routing and computing optimization in integrated sensors and satellite networks;
  11. Network slicing design in sensor networks;
  12. Artificial-intelligence-enabled routing and decision-making on sensors networks.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
