Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Geochronology and the spectral analysis of pigments play crucial roles in understanding ancient art, artifacts, and cultural practices.

Detailed chronological information on pigment utilization can help us to better understand human symbolic behavior. Several absolute dating methods are generally adopted together with relative techniques. Performed via the utilization of modern technologies, geochronology attribution of the archaeological material and pigments applied in pottery, rock art, burial, alfresco, etc., is widespread.

Different techniques, such as microscopic analysis, Raman, FTIR, X-ray diffraction, SEM, etc., are used to identify mineral pigments in archaeological finds.

Studying the application techniques of pigments provides information about artistic styles, skills, and cultural preferences. Variations in brush strokes, layering, and pigment mixing reveal artistic choices and local traditions.

Integrating archaeological characteristics and the spectral analysis of pigments provides a comprehensive understanding of the artistic, cultural, and technological aspects of ancient civilizations. These approaches contribute to the preservation and interpretation of cultural heritage.
