Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues, 

Two-dimensional (2D) materials possess freestanding sheet-like structures with thicknesses ranging from atomic or molecular scale to few hundreds of nanometers; they have been extensively explored as a kind of emerging material since the discovery of graphene in 2004. They can be divided into 2D organic materials (i.e., 2D polymers, 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)), 2D inorganic materials (i.e., transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), black phosphorus (BP), 2D perovskite, and MXene), and 2D carbon materials (i.e., graphene and graphdiyne) based on their composition. The planar structure of 2D materials endows them with remarkable electronic properties due to quantum confinement effects and orientation. Additionally, 2D materials with thin-layer structures have large surface areas, excellent optical transparency, and a rapid photoexcitation response at the interface to avoid the recombination of charge carriers, thereby improving the efficient utilization and conversion of photoelectron energy, and/or lowering the operating voltage/current. Moreover, the good dispersibility of 2D materials in solution affords them excellent processability. Therefore, 2D materials are favorable for fabricating photoelectric devices in an array of applications, including photodetectors, sensors (i.e., gas, chemical, and health), integrated circuits, and energy conversion (i.e., photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and generators). The purpose of this Special Issue of Micromachines, “Two-Dimensional Materials for Photoelectric Devices”, is to promote the development of 2D materials in multidisciplinary fields. We welcome the submission of original research and review articles on topics including but not limited to the synthesis of 2D materials with new methods, the fabrication of novel photoelectric devices, and their applications.
