Travel Award

Dear Colleagues,

As Editor-in-Chief of Mathematics, I am pleased to announce the winners of the Mathematics Travel Awards for 2018:

Travel Awards were granted to Timo Welti, a PhD student in Dr. Arnulf Jentzen’s group in the Department of Mathematics at ETH Zürich, and to Dr. Patrick Kürschner, a post-doctoral researcher in Dr. Peter Benner’s group at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems, Germany.

Timo Welti has been working in the field of stochastic analysis. His recent research mainly focuses on new methods for solving high-dimensional optimal stopping problems. He will give a talk about “Deep optimal stopping: Solving high-dimensional optimal stopping problems with deep learning” at the SIAM Conference on Uncertainty Quantification.

Dr. Patrick Kürschner has been working in the research area of numerical linear algebra. His research mainly focuses on numerical solution strategies for large-scale eigenvalue problems, matrix equations, matrix functions, preconditioning, and applications thereof. He will give a talk about “A comparison of rational Krylov and related methods for large Riccati equations” at the SIAM Conference on Applied Linear Algebra 2018.
