Dear Colleagues,
Halophytes are highly salt-tolerant plants capable of completing their life cycle in soils with a salt concentration of up to 200 mM NaCl or more and withstanding abiotic constraints (e.g., drought, extreme temperatures, etc.) due to antioxidant defense mechanisms including enzymes (e.g., superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase) and secondary metabolites (e.g., polyphenolics), the latter displaying important biological activities (e.g., antioxidant, anti-inflammatory). Halophytes are therefore good sources of food and feed, and of natural products for several industries, including the food and pharmaceutical industries. They also have an important role within the context of soil and water salinization, sustainability, and climate change since they can be commercially cultivated in saline conditions where the production of glicophytes is impossible. This Special Issue will provide a platform for researchers to publish studies on the exploitation of marine halophytes (species living in close connection, and close distance, with the marine environment) as sources of bioactive metabolites with biotechnological applications.
