Dear Colleagues,
Marine organisms are characterized by a great diversity of lipidomes, which is mirrored by the wide range of lipid classes with different structural features and specificity of their lipid signatures. Lipids from marine organisms are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which possesses well-known health-promoting effects. However, the structure-activity relationship of bioactive lipids and their synergistic effects remain poorly understood. Despite the nutritional value and healthy properties of marine lipids, the complexity of marine lipidomes hampers the data availability on the detailed characterization of the lipid signature of marine organisms. The high complexity of their distinct lipid profiles can only be unveiled by using modern lipidomics approaches. Lipidomics is an undoubted tool for the detection, characterization, and quantification of lipid species from marine sources.
This Special Issue of Marine Drugs devoted to “Lipidomic Studies for the Characterisation of Marine Lipids” aims to highlight recent advances in the field of marine lipidomics and provide a comprehensive overview on the characterization of the lipid profile from distinct marine organisms using a lipidomic approach. As guest editors, we kindly invite colleagues working on marine lipidomics to contribute with manuscripts to this Special Issue of Marine Drugs with the aim of filling the existing gap in the knowledge of the detailed lipidome fingerprinting of marine organisms.
