Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the digital transformation, the manufacturing industry is moving towards drastic and disruptive changes in the way goods are produced. Machines will become more intelligent and more autonomous. They will be expected to autonomously perform, act, and, more importantly, choose the best actions that are suitable for different situations. Based on continuous learning, they will be aware of their health status and act accordingly. Machines with artificial immune systems will adapt their performance to extend their lives through a self-healing process. They will interact safely and collaboratively with humans.

This Special Issue of Machines is about the health of future machines; how to design them for embedded reliability, robustness, and resilience; and how to make them intelligent, autonomous, and artificially immune with a self-healing process. Authors are invited to provide their research on the aforementioned fields to indicate the future trends in the health design and management of autonomous equipment.

Suitable topics for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to:

  • Machinery diagnostics;
  • Machinery prognostics;
  • Prescriptive maintenance;
  • Analytics of machinery;
  • Statistical models for equipment health management (EHP);
  • Artificial intelligence for EFP;
  • Autonomous machinery;
  • Self-healing machinery;
  • Artificially immune machinery;
  • Machinery design for reliability;
  • Machinery design for sustainability;
  • Machinery design for resilience;
  • Machinery design for robustness.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Machines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
