Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

For the past decade, global megatrends have affected various branches of the global economy together with co-related research and their disciplines. Marine science and engineering are not spared either, especially in the context of maritime transport and logistics. The crucial impact of maritime transport and logistics on the global economy is undisputed. The fundamental cause of megatrends and change is widespread digitization. The scope this widespread digitization is related to autonomous ships, smart solutions applied in float vehicles and infrastructure, digitization of waterways (through the application of sensors and communication networks), cutting-edge autonomous navigation technologies and for all aspects of the maritime operation, and more.

Although certain maritime sectors benefit from digitization more than others; this is especially true since companies have been able to collect and analyze unprecedented quantities of data, owing to the use of sensors (particularly smart sensors), monitoring instrumentation, accompanying devices and equipment (e.g., microprocessors or communication units), which make it possible to convert measurements into a readable signal simply by means of sensing technology. Recent developments in virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligent technology, and digital twins/shadows/models have accelerated research on autonomous float vehicles and infrastructure within maritime transport and logistics. These all attract the attention of researchers in this field.

This Special Issue is primarily concerned with the following topics: diversity and integration of digital applications within marine science and engineering (e.g., data standardization and advanced analytics, digitization of supply chains), high-tech application, the future of work forms in the context of various novel technologies application (work forms in a digitalized business environment, the context of cobots and robotics applied in maritime transport), engineering aspects of digitization and automation in the context of maritime logistics management (including augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, digital twin, digital shadow, cyber–physical systems, IoT, simulation models, and issues concerning optimized and flexible adaptation of processes and operations, processes and flows to new business models, customer preferences and market conditions). These are just the topics selection, as this Special Issue is intended to be an introduction to the wide waters of offshore innovation.

The Guest Editor invites researchers and industry representatives in the global communities of maritime transport, logistics, and accompanied production to contribute original research papers, review articles, and empirical studies to stimulate the debate within the scope of examinations on the various novel technologies and achievements, addressed in the keywords below.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
