Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Hydrogels are highly swollen microporous three-dimensional networks of crosslinked hydrophilic homopolymers, copolymers, or macromers, possessing excellent biocompatibility with tunable properties. They can undergo structural conformation changes under different stimuli such as temperature, pH, ultrasound, and magnetic fields, which are crucial for controlled and targeted drug release. The smart and functionalized development of polymer-based hydrogels with intelligent properties and tailored functionalities represents a groundbreaking area of research within the fields of materials science, tissue engineering, drug delivery, and medical science. This Special Issue is motivated by the growing interest observed in the design, fabrication, and application of functionalized and bioactive factor-enriched hydrogels in biomedical fields.

In general, this Special Issue is oriented towards all types of polymer-based hydrogels (supramolecular hydrogels, reinforced hydrogels, and stimuli-responsive hydrogels), innovations in hydrogel-forming materials, and improvements in hydrogel fabrication technology and process control to enable the consistent production of fiber-reinforced hydrogels, supramolecular hydrogels, and advanced multifunctional materials with unique physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological functionalities. These advancements aim to create multipurpose scaffolds, smart materials, active devices, and new biomedical applications for multi-responsive polymer materials. Furthermore, this Special Issue aims to highlight progress in polymer materials, synthesis, characterization, properties, importance, and applications of polymer-based hydrogel composites, copolymers, blends, and composites for biomedical applications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Functional Biomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
