Dear Colleagues,
Since the serendipitous discovery of the anticancer properties of cisplatin, bioinorganic chemistry has achieved considerable breakthroughs. This is due to the presence of transition metal ions, which confer unique properties in their derived metal complexes compared to those given by organic molecules. It is thus possible to obtain scaffolds to design agents that act in a targeted way at the molecular level due to their specificities: molecular geometries; variable oxidation states; high stability, kinetic and thermodynamic properties, modulated in the function of the coordinated ligands; greater flexibility; and modularity in their preparation. The interaction between pharmacologically active biomolecules and transition metal ions has opened the way to the construction of new drugs, sustained by the specific mechanisms of action of the coordinated bioligands.
Moreover, compared to the initial focus on cytotoxic activity alone, over the years attention has also turned to the development of new metal-based compounds with many potential applications (antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-HIV).
This Special Issue aims to collect original research articles or comprehensive review papers focused on recent advances in the synthesis and the applications of organometallic and coordination complexes containing chelated bioactive molecules.
