Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

A report by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) revealed that more than 30,000 deaths related to healthcare-associated infections (HAI) occur in Europe annually.

COVID-19 has further highlighted this problem and it is clear that we need to resort to training campaigns that address the appropriate utilization of masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE), and undertake both environmental and individual health and hygiene prevention measures in order to aid healthcare workers and patients. COVID-19 has taught us to focus on this problem, paying attention to critical issues such as hand hygiene, the correct use of PPE, and the prevention of nosocomial infections. We must learn from the lessons of COVID-19 in order address and plan serious prevention policies for HAIs, many of which are preventable.
