Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The recent and complex transformations (mainly technological, but not only) that are impacting current work have caused a substantial change in the conception, creation, conditions and relationships of work. Specifically, the pandemic has acted as a promoter or catalyst for trends that were previously taking hold in organizational cultures and structures. The disruptive effects caused by the accumulation of these changes have brought about a new labor and organizational nature that, in turn, has increased these effects in different economic sectors, in different jobs and, fundamentally, in the workers themselves. The massive application of new technologies in companies and organizations of all kinds has generated a notable increase in possibilities and benefits for a new global labor market; however, the very processes of automation and digitization carried out intensively in the world labor have led to a notable increase in unemployment (especially in vulnerable and less qualified population groups), an increase in the percentages of working poverty, an unprecedented deployment of atypical forms of employment, and, especially, a significant increase in job insecurity. Working on digital platforms and hybrid jobs poses a complex challenge for all types of workers, including politicians, unions, managers and businessmen, and the employees themselves. These new structures, with their highly flexible and digitized strategies, are demanding new skills and abilities from workers, requiring a change of mentality, a complex adaptation process and, therefore, permanent training strategies. All this is assuming, at the same time, that the levels of job insecurity, stress, burnout, anxiety and other mental dysfunctions in workers are increasing. This broad field of specialization is raising many questions; above all, however, it is tackling complex challenges. Likewise, this scientific field requires more and better research that deepens and articulates these processes and phenomena in order to achieve a new framework of conditions and labor relations that prevent the new psychosocial risks of current work and reduce the effects on health, both physical and mental, of the workers. In this Special Issue, researchers and research groups are invited to present new empirical and theoretical advances on these topics, especially those that combine high academic rigor with practical approaches to provide effective solutions that achieve decent, healthy and inclusive work environments.
