Dear Colleagues,
In-silico medicine (also known as "computational medicine") is the application of computational sciences to problems involving health and medicine. By using modelling and simulation technologies, in-silico medicine aims at integrating computational approaches for improving prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment planning and execution or management of disease.
Musculoskeletal disorders are one of the main fields of application in in-silico medicine. The use of computational musculoskeletal models is currently well accepted to study musculoskeletal disorders and evaluate the impact of treatments. Using musculoskeletal modelling and simulations, we can determine the disease-specific characteristics of musculoskeletal disorders. Disease-specific biomarkers can also be determined by testing patients at multiple time points. Patient virtualization, surgical simulation and 3D-printing technologies are becoming increasingly important means of improving skills acquisition, optimizing clinical outcomes and promoting patient safety. Furthermore, in-silico medicine in musculoskeletal rehabilitation could let us know how to modify physical therapy or exercise regimes to deliver the optimal regenerative response. In addition, it can be employed in the design and optimisation of active prosthetics to improve motor function.
We welcome papers that address clinical and scientific interest concerning in-silico medicine in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including but not limited to:
- Congenital and acquired hip disorders (congenital hip dysplasia, SCFE, Perthes disease, femoral-acetabular impingement, AVN and post-traumatic disorders);
- Congenital and acquired knee disorders (valgus knee, varus knee, congenital and habitual patella dislocation, sports injuries and arthroscopic surgery);
- Foot diseases and deformities (congenital clubfoot, flat foot, forefoot deformities, hemimelia and longitudinal defects of the leg and foot);
- Limb length discrepancies, coronal, sagittal and axial deformities of the lower limbs (congenital deficiencies and post-traumatic deformities);
- Congenital and acquired deformities of the upper limb (Sprengel's shoulder, congenital nonunion of the clavicle, congenital and post-traumatic deformities of the elbow and forearm);
- Congenital and acquired deformities of the spine (scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis and spinal anomalies);
- Rare musculoskeletal diseases and deformities, bone tumors, genetic syndromes and chromosomopathies.
