Special Issue Information

 Dear Colleagues,

The world is experiencing an accelerated population aging that leads to a complex epidemiological profile in advanced ages. Older people present a significant health burden of non-communicable diseases, as well as a series of geriatric syndromes that affect their quality of life but also impact the family, community, and health services environment. The data indicate that people aged 60 years and over will go from 1 billion in 2019 to 1.4 billion in 2030 and 2.1 billion in 2050, indicating the future for health systems.

To deal with these changes in demographic dynamics, the World Health Organization (WHO) has promoted the Decade of Healthy Aging, where it has been proposed to guarantee that all people can fulfill their potential with dignity and equality and in an environment healthy. However, it is clear that efforts need to be redoubled for this purpose to be fulfilled, since not all societies are aging on equal terms. In fact, there are wide disparities in health conditions at this stage of life, which is mediated by characteristics such as sex, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, education, and country, for example.

A first step to be able to take actions in health is to recognize what these people get sick and die from and how the social determinants are related to different health outcomes. Likewise, it is the opportunity to generate spaces where successful experiences that contribute to healthy aging can be exchanged, so that decision makers have useful tools for the design and implementation of public policies that put older people at the center.

Papers from various disciplines such as epidemiology, public health, economy, demography, political science, social sciences, etc. that account for the burden of disease in older people are welcome in this Special Issue. Those works that address inequalities between and within countries, as well as between age subgroups, are of special interest. Some topics that can be proposed are:

  • Years of life lost due to disability;
  • Years of quality of life lost;
  • Healthy life expectancy;
  • Disability/functionality;
  • Resilience in advanced ages;
  • Geriatric syndromes;
  • Social determinants/health inequities.
