Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The high prevalence of obesity in the US at nearly 40%, coupled with rising obesity rates, is driving the need for innovative approaches to promote weight loss. However, interventions aimed at promoting weight loss are complicated by the fact that the etiology of obesity is multifactorial, resulting from the combined effects of genetics, environment, and behavior. Obesity has also been shown to contribute to the onset of additional chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Consequently, understanding the physiologic consequences of obesity, as well as the treatment of obesity, is complicated by the need to simultaneously address co-morbidities. Another important factor to consider is the growing concern regarding health disparities among various racial, ethnic, geography, and socioeconomic groups related to obesity and obesity-related health outcomes. Further contributing to health disparities in the treatment of obesity is the awareness of underlying bias toward obese patients in healthcare as well as shame associated with being obese potentially discouraging obese patients from seeking medical attention and/or participation in obesity-related research. Therefore, this Special Issue features a broad range of clinical practices and research investigations aimed at developing a better understanding of the complexities associated with the treatment of obesity.
