Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Medical treatment of glaucoma is still today the first choice in glaucoma therapy using intra-ocular pressure-lowering eye drops. To date, there are four most used pharmacological classes, beta blockers, prostaglandine analogues, topical anhydrase inhibitors and alpha2agonists, which are being joined by a new pharmacological class, rho kinases. Alongside the formulation in drops, some slow-release implants are being studied and have been approved, which appear to be very interesting and promising.

The scientific community is increasingly in agreement on the usefulness of supporting neuromodulatory treatments in the treatment of patients with glaucoma, new drugs and new formulations are being studied, some of which are only recently available. As far as precision medicine is concerned, there are many studies aimed at this goal.

This Special Issue aims to collect articles on new hypotonic therapies for glaucoma both in drops and with new methods of administration, but also new medical therapies of neuroprotection and neuromodulation. Articles on protocols and treatment guidelines and articles on personalized and precision medicine in glaucoma are also welcome.

Furthermore, the aim is to provide suggestions on new medical options to be developed and implemented to promote the quality of life and maintain visual function in glaucoma patients.

In this Special Issue, original research articles, reviews and meta-analyses of existing or under the study of medical therapies are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • medical topical therapy;
  • slow-release device;
  • neuroprotection;
  • neuromodulation;
  • precision medicine;
  • quality of life;
  • glaucoma-related ocular surface disease.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.
