Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The concept of sexual and reproductive health is defined by the United Nations Population Fund as a “[c]omprehensive approach to analysing and responding to the needs of men and women with respect to sexuality and reproduction”. It is a broad concept that includes diverse components in all areas of nursing, such as contraceptive and reproductive health counselling, information on sexually transmitted diseases, risky behaviours, counselling on responsible parenthood, and gender-based violence, among others. Nursing staff, in all levels of care (primary care, advanced practice, public health, etc.) carry out their functions with the aim of improving the health of individuals, families and communities, including good sexual and reproductive health as a fundamental aspect in order to achieve physical, mental and social wellbeing. This requires adequate training and information and the empowerment of individuals with regard to sexual and reproductive health. In a changing environment, it is necessary to improve the knowledge of the discipline with studies that make visible the interventions and evidence of the discipline on the subject. Therefore, studies that address sexual and reproductive health from the perspective of health promotion, prevention, management and different professional practice settings, as well as the training of new professionals, are welcome. We hope that this Special Issue will be an opportunity to share and disseminate studies of high interest to improve professional nursing practice.
