Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Since late 2019, the international healthcare landscape has changed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent waves. In the earlier phases of the pandemic, the impact of COVID-19 was thought to be limited to the adult population. As the pandemic has evolved and new viral variants have been identified, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the pediatric patient population has been recognized. In some cases, COVID-19 in pediatrics has mirrored similar presentations to those seen in adults with severe respiratory failure, while in others, it has presented as unique pathologies to the pediatric population such as cardiac involvement in multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

In this Special Issue of Healthcare, we aim to provide readers with a comprehensive review of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the pediatric population, more specifically highlighting the impact on pediatric critical care, including, but not limited to:

  • SARS-CoV-2 disease pathogenesis in pediatric patients;
  • COVID-19-associated respiratory failure in children;
  • COVID-19-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in children;
  • Use of extracorporeal support (ECMO) in pediatric patients for COVID-19-related pathologies;
  • Pediatric cardiac pathologies in COVID-19;
  • Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C);
  • Impact of COVID-19 on children with congenital heart disease;
  • Long COVID in children;
  • Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and related healthcare resource limitations on pediatric critical care;
  • Novel therapeutics for COVID-19 in pediatric critical care.
