Section Information

The section “Transgenic Technology” publishes papers in the area of functional engineering of cellular functions with nucleic acid-based technologies. A wide array of methods and their versatile implementations are of special relevance, including but not limited to gene knock-in and knock-out technologies, insertional mutagenesis screens, cellular reprogramming, transfer of therapeutic genes and gene editing. The focus of the section is on research papers addressing refinement and further development of genome engineering technologies in any species and their applications in the areas of basic research, biotechnology, gene discovery and gene therapy.

Topics within the scope of this section include, but are not limited to:

  • Genomic manipulations across the tree of life;
  • Protein production for pharmaceutical purposes;
  • Transgenic, knock-in and knock-out technologies and their applications;
  • Germline gene transfer for biomedical research and biotechnology;
  • Insertional mutagenesis in model systems;
  • Cellular reprogramming;
  • The development and use of designer nucleases, including CRISPR/Cas9;
  • Integrative genetic elements, including viral vectors;
  • Transposon-based gene delivery systems;
  • Episomal vector systems;
  • RNA-based technologies;
  • Gene therapy.
