Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The automotive/transportation sector is experiencing multifaceted transformations due to the rapid advancement in the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm and ubiquitous connectivity. IoT technology has a significant impact on the automotive industry by enabling various innovations, such as automated driving, smart fleet management, and intelligent transportation infrastructure.  In recent years, the automated vehicle paradigm has been progressing at a very rapid pace. Connected and autonomous electric vehicle (CAEV) technologies are considered as highly appealing automotive technologies. Traditional original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) including GM and Volvo as well as disruptive players including Waymo and Uber are heavily investing in CAEV technologies and adopting different approaches to bring major changes to the automotive industry. Currently, several automakers offer connected autonomous vehicles with self-driving features such as autopilot and self-parking. In the near future, CAEVs will evolve in ways that will have a major impact on transportation infrastructure, automotive industries, as well as vehicle ownership.  As the number of connected vehicles continues to grow, conventional vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs) are evolving as the Internet of Vehicles and, more precisely, as the Internet of CAEV (IoCAEV), which may be referred to as a platform that enables an exchange of information between a CAEV and its surroundings through various communication media.  CAEV technologies along with IoCAEV are an active area of research and possess numerous challenging applications. Though CAEV technologies show great promise and have substantial benefits, there are several impediments along the way of their deployment.  In this Special Issue, we are particularly interested in innovative CAEV solutions on the IoT platform that can foster radical changes in the society as well as improve the quality of life of the people. Thus, the topics of interest include but are not limited to:

• CAEV applications for smart cities
• Internet of CAEV (IoCAEV)
• Smart e-mobility solutions for CAEVs
• AI and Big data for CAEV on IoT

As the importance of vehicle data increases, it has become very important to safely store them. However, because onboard diagnostics scanners generally used to store vehicle data are IoT devices, security and capacity issues exist to store data safely and efficiently. To address this, we propose a system that stores vehicle data safely and efficiently using blockchain and IPFS. Users can access the system through DApp, an Ethereum-distributed application, and manage their vehicle data. Various experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the superior performance of this system, and the experimental results show its advantages in terms of data-processing speed and cost.
