Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to kindly contribute your work to the current Special Issue focusing on “Smart Coatings”.

Coatings with the capacities of responses to the environmental stimuli are highly desired for various applications. Such coatings are generally called “smart coatings”, with varied properties including self-healing, antifouling, passive icephobicity, super hydrophobicity, antimicrobial, photothermal effects, and many others. Under the strong driving force of materials nanotechnology in the last decade, the development of smart coatings is gaining an unprecedented speed. New smart coatings with strategically designed structures, or that incorporate ingredients responsive to light, pH, pressure, temperature, etc., are becoming popular in the literature, targeting various application fields.

This Special Issue is devoted to high quality research articles and review papers on the state-of-the-art of different smart coatings. Both theoretical and experimental studies on smart coatings, especially on their design, fabrication, characterization and applications, are the emphasis. Review work on current and future advances, highlighting new perspectives, of smart coatings also are highly welcome. The interested topics concerning smart coatings include, but are not limited to:

  • Design and preparation of self-healing coatings;
  • Passive anti-icing, anti-snow, and anti-adhesive coatings;
  • Temperature responsive coatings for various application purposes;
  • Photothermal effects in coatings;
  • Structure–property–function relationship in smart coatings.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Smart self-healing coatings offer a revolutionary approach to mitigating metal corrosion, a problem with significant economic and environmental impacts. Divided into intrinsic and extrinsic types, these coatings autonomously rectify the damage. Intrinsic variants utilize reversible bonds to achieve ongoing repair, while extrinsic ones incorporate micro/nanocontainers that activate upon environmental triggers to mend micro-cracks, their efficacy dictated by the encapsulated healing agents’ volume. This review dissects the rapidly evolving sector of stimuli-responsive self-healing coatings, emphasizing the progress in micro/nano container technology. It discusses the synthesis and encapsulation processes of different micro/nanocontainers and charts the transition from single to multistimulus-responsive systems, which enhances the coatings’ sensitivity and functionality. The addition of multifunctional traits such as self-reporting and anti-microbial actions further broadens their industrial applicability. The review provides a succinct overview of the field’s current state and future potential, envisioning a paradigm shift in corrosion protection through advanced smart coatings. Full article
