Research on Sleep Apnea and Systemic Inflammation

Dear Colleagues，

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of total or partial obstruction of the upper airway during sleep that are associated with intermittent hypoxemia, increased inspiratory effort and sleep disruption. Besides being a very prevalent disorder, OSA is an emerging socio-health problem because it causes an excess mortality and it is associated with several relevant comorbidities, including cardiovascular, neurological, metabolic and even neoplastic diseases. Moreover, great emphasis has been given to the chronic inflammation in OSA comorbidities. In this scenario, OSA might be implicated to increase the basal inflammatory state, which might play a role in the etiology of the comorbidities associated with chronic inflammation.

This Special Issue, “Sleep Apnea and Systemic Inflammation”, will cover a selection of recent research topics and current review articles in the field of inflammation response in OSA patients that has been associated with its comorbidities.
