Progress in Biomarker Research

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue will publish articles describing the discovery, identification, labeling and targeting of biomarkers and their role in disease diagnosis and treatment. The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

Air pollutants, including particulate matter, ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide, can cause asthma and other respiratory diseases, neurodevelopmental disorders, and increase the risk of cancer and chronic diseases. Such effects may be mediated by oxidative stress, inflammation, endocrine disruption, and epigenetic modifications, which can be diagnosed using biomarkers.

Various regions of our planet, replete with many plant species with chemotherapeutic potential, are of interest regarding the search for new biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other pathologies.

Genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, epigenomics, kinomics, and other omics provide valuable information about the complexity of biological networks and signaling associated with diseases, and offer predictive biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment. Many genomes have been sequenced, revealing potential biomarkers for diagnosing inherited diseases.

Another direction is high-throughput microarray technology, which has made it possible to screen the cell-free synthesized proteome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and identify new antibodies, some of which are potential biomarkers of tuberculosis.

Studies tracking the inflammatory biomarkers closely associated with SARS-CoV-2 viral infection have been able to predict infections in patients with very low levels of viral RNA. This discovery has played an important role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Databases of biomarkers for complex human diseases have been developed, including infections, colorectal cancer, heart failure and eye pathologies. Artificial intelligence (AI) can modulate human health and perform data mining. Thus, AI will play an important role in big data analysis for biomarker selection and disease therapy through precision medicine.

For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
