Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Microfluidics is a rapidly growing field that involves the design, fabrication, and manipulation of small-scale fluid systems. In biomedical devices, the integration of multiple engineering tools and microfluidics has facilitated the development of lab-on-a-chip platforms for the advancement of disease diagnosis, personalized therapy development, tissue engineering, organ-on-a-chip systems, and beyond. These platforms consist of integrated systems that allow for the precise and efficient handling and analysis of biological samples in a miniaturized format, which is often not possible to achieve using conventional approaches.

Microfluidics engineering for biomedical devices can involve the use of microchannels, micropumps, and microvalves to control how fluids flow and are distributed in the device, as well as the integration of passive and active components (such as biosensors and detectors for the real-time, end-point, or subsequent monitoring of fluid properties and sample characteristics). The further development of engineered microfluidic platforms has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by enabling faster, more accurate, and more affordable diagnoses and treatments of diseases. The field is constantly and rapidly evolving, with new advancements in materials, fabrication techniques, and the integration of novel capabilities.

This Special Issue of Bioengineering on Microfluidic Engineering for Biomedical Devices seeks original research articles and reviews focused on microfluidic platforms that intend to advance healthcare, either from a biological or an engineering perspective, where the integration of different disciplines plays a crucial role.
