Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, antimicrobial resistance has become a serious concern for animal and human health. The emergence of resistant pathogens in animals may pose serious economic and health concerns due to a decreased responsiveness of diseased animals to antimicrobial therapy. In addition, the emergence of resistance in pet, wild, and domestic animals is a public health risk due to the potential transfer of resistant bacteria or genetic determinants to humans. Indeed, a high demand for fast and reliable methods for the rapid detection of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and determinants, even when testing a large number of samples, is required due to the increasing threat posed by antimicrobial resistance. Molecular assays, even if not without their limitations, perfectly fit this purpose. In particular, high-throughput technologies are able to generate an amount of data and information that can be very helpful in understanding the molecular basis of this complex issue.

In this Special Issue, we welcome original research papers and reviews dealing with:

1) Occurrence and circulation of resistant bacteria in food-producing animals as detected by high-throughput technologies (e.g. NGS, qPCR, microarrays);

2) Molecular detection and epidemiology of resistant food-borne pathogens in domestic animal populations and their environment;

3) Use of high-throughput technologies for improving the knowledge and covering the gap in the molecular basis of resistance determinants in domestic animals;

4) Development of new technologies (e.g., nanotechnologies) and protocols for detecting antimicrobial resistance determinants in animal bacteria.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Animals is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
