Dear colleagues,
Common corneal diseases in equids are:
- Injuries (e.g., superficial, deep, and penetrating injuries; foreign bodies in the cornea).
- Corneal infections (with and without visible lesions; corneal ulcers, corneal abscesses, and various causative organisms).
- Corneal inflammations with very different clinical pictures and differently used terminology (these include "IMMK" = immune-mediated keratitis, which includes various types of corneal inflammations, e.g., keratitis parenchymatosa, keratitis punctata seu maculosa, and other types of keratitis that cannot be clearly assigned ophthalmologically).
- Corneal opacities of known or unknown etiologies.
- Corneal edemas with different etiologies (e.g., glaucoma, endothelial diseases, and trauma).
- Eosinophilic disorders (with different clinical manifestations).
- Tumors (e.g., squamous cell carcinoma and carcinoma in situ, or—more rarely—malignant lymphoma).
Both the diagnosis and therapy of corneal diseases have progressed in recent years. Many diseases are treated very differently by different veterinarians experienced in equine ophthalmology. Additionally, the terminology for some corneal diseases is not used consistently. In this Special Issue, the current experiences and therapeutic approaches to the treatment of corneal diseases of different working groups can be collected. Case reports are also welcome.
