Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript reviewed diverse types of bioactive compounds from marine macroalgae focusing on their applications in cosmeceutical industry. The review is interesting to the field. However, the review in its current form lacks in-depth discussion and prospect. I suggest the authors to add more discussion on the challenges and hurdles facing the field/application, such as the process of cultivation, harvesting, extraction, and clinical characterization, etc.

Authors Response: Thanks for the comments and the suggestion.

We have introduced a new section (section 9) with Challenges and Opportunities

Reviewer 2 Report

I think it is a very interesting and complete review, with abundant bibliography, with very clear tables and illustrations. Therefore, it should be published since it contributes to the knowledge of this ecological group of aquatic organisms, non-toxic and with abundant molecules and mineral salts potentially beneficial for skin care and maintenance.

In sections 4 and 6 we introduce some additional information about non-toxic and with abundant molecules and mineral salts potentially beneficial for skin care and maintenance.

Reviewer 3 Report

The work is well organized and well structured with just a few notes that I present below:

  • the images in the figures should be scaled to show the size of the exposed algae
  • not all the images of the figure are described in the text, and since the figure is so complete it should have correspondence in the text
  • this review is about macroalgae, it seems unnecessary to include data on a microalgae in table 1
  • the chemical formulas presented should be in separate figures in each item where the family of specific compounds is mentioned, for example images of pigments when talking about pigments, polysaccharides when talking about them in the text.

Authors Response: Thanks for the comments and the suggestions.

- Added scales to all algae images

- All algae images correspond to species mentioned in the text and tables

- All information related to microalgae was taken from the text

- All chemical formulas presented were grouped in different figures and separated in each item where the family of specific compounds are mentioned.

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report

One minor thing - line 599 "The extraction procedure of bioactive ingredients can be classified into conventional and 599 novel techniques." should be moved to the beginning of the next paragraph.

An additional comment of Referee 1
